What Are the Best Brands or Types of Mascara? The Answers May Surprise You

I have always been a mascara junkie - it's lipsgloss' perfect mate, and a quick pick-me-up for any face. As one of the most feminizing agents in the cosmetics arsenal, the effectiveness of a woman's mascara is very important. Get it right, and you look young and gorgeous. Get it wrong, and you look like a prostitue being attacked by spiders.

Want to know how to make your eyes looks great no matter what your style or your budget? Keep reading, girl ;-)

What Mascara Is Supposed To Do

Mascara is supposed to perform at least one of three basic functions: thicken the lashes, create the appearance of a great volume of lashes, and/or lengthen lashes. Most women arguably want a mascara to perform all three to some varying degree, but few do. Mascaras that lengthen well tend to make lashes look skinny, and mascara that is great for volumizing is often too thick and clumpy to lengthen lashes well. Mascaras that make lashes themselves look thick are usually not so great for true volumizing and do not give that pretty feathery look when you want to go long.

What's a girl to do?

There are some really god multifunction mascaras on the market these days, and if you know what look you're going for, you can choose with confidence.

Use the following information to make an informed decision!

My Mascara Story

I've been wearing mascara since I could get away with it (sorry Mom), and I have been in love with it ever since. Although a woman's eyelashes aren't the main attraction of the face, the right application of mascara can soften and feminize any woman's look, which is especially important if you have strong features like me!

Now, as a minister, I do not wear much makeup because of my religion (all things in moderation), so I like to get the most out of what I do wear. Since my goal is not to look made up but to look young and healthy, facial hair grooming makes a huge difference. Simply having well groomed, full brows and lashes can make any woman look younger and more vibrant.

So, whether you're looking for a made up face or just a little boost, your choice of mascara is very important. Different kinds do different things, and it can make a huge difference what you use. I hope that my years of experience with this medium will help you look and feel prettier and more feminine :-)

My Own Eyes - Unretouched Photo of Me Wearing The Best Mascara Ever

Best Overall Mascara

Physicians Formula "Lash In A Tube" is the Best Mascara EVER!

My little sister, who's lashes are sparce at best, called me one day and opened the conversation with, "Oh my God - have you ever heard of Lash In A Tube?" It made her go from dog eyes to looking like she had false eyelashes; someone even asked her if she had on lashes!

While I am much more blessed with naturally full eyelashes than my sister, I knew that if it could make her look like she had her lashes done, it was good. I was right! It's great for length, thinkening, and volume without making you look like a tramp.

Lashes look soft and conditioned, yet they get amazing length and natrual looking thivk volume. Perfect for everyday and even for evening - I don't use anything else.

Plus, the price is MORE than nice - it generally runs for about $5! and it works better than Prescriptive's False Eyelashes Mascara!

The problem is that it's harder and harder to find in stores, so your best bet may be to get it online. Click the link to get yours! It's what I'm wearing in the picture - with no liner or anything else!

The last time I checked, there was some in black on sale for $1.00! Click the link to see if it's still there!

Tools of the Trade

If you want star lashes for every occasion, there are certain tools that you simply can't live without. You need an eyelash curler, great eyeliner, and maybe even a lash/brow brush and comb tool.

Here are some of the best tools for putting your best face forward.

My Own Eyes - Smoky Eye Without Looking Smoked Out

How To Create a Simple, Elegant Smoky Eye Look

As you can see above, I created an extremely subtle smoky effect, however, even if you zoom out, it's still noticable. What is isn't is in-your-face, which was never the original intent of the smoky eye look. However, high fashion and fad culture has created an entire new segment of eye makeup that is full of black and gray eye shadows that are overused and often abused.

While your smoky eye doesn't have to be as subtle as mine, you can create a subtle, classy smoky eye look with just your mascara and an eyeliner pencil! No shadow required.

Subtle Smoky Eye DOs

* DO use a soft, kohl eyeliner pencil or eye crayon with a medium sized point.

* DO line your top lid from around the center or the eye outwards to the edge, and the bottom corner ONLY.

* DO line your eyes BEFORE you apply your mascara.

* DO concentrate your mascara application at the base of your lashes and the outer corners. The idea is to create thickness and volume, not length.

* DO add more liner in the outer corner of the eye - this is the epicenter of the entire effect.

* DO use an eyeshadow applicator or smudging tool to gently smudge the liner.

Subtle Smoky Eye DON'Ts

*DON'T outline your entire eye unless you want to look like a racoon addicted to heroin.

* DON'T use black eyeshadow instead of an eyeliner pencil to cover more area, again, unless you want to look like a nocturnal dope fiend.

* DON'T try to go for long lashes with this look - you will look like a prostitute being attacked by spiders.

* DON'T wear deep colored lipstick or gloss with this look. You will probably look like a clown; a sad clown who has been crying.

* DON'T forget that less is more!

Now, you're ready to create a classy yet alluring look for evening that will knock 'em dead without knocking them out!

Here are some liners that will help you get there:

Creme Mascara: What Is It and What Does It Do?

Like the name implies, creme (or cream) mascara is a creamy formula that is not quite like standard caking mascara formulas. It's not as thick and it doesn't harden as stiff as regular mascara, so it conditions more and gives a softer look. The downside is that is smears more easily and is not the best formula for sculpting lashes to a high impact look.

I prefer creme mascara because I absolutely have to have a natural look when I get dolled up. Even with formal wear, I only want to look polished and pretty; not glamorous.

Here are some great creme mascara formulas that will make you look marvelous.
